Nestled in the deep silt of the channel of water known as Atherley Narrows that joins southern Ontario’s Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching lie the remains of one of Canada’s oldest, and perhaps least well known, National Historic Sites.
The Mnjikaning Fish Weirs are almost 5,000 years old!
Like weirs found in other parts of Canada, the Mnjikaning Fish Weirs controlled the movement of fish with the use of fences or walls so that they could be caught more easily and efficiently.
