Log cabins are closely associated with the Canadian pioneer experience and one of the most popular designs for the handcrafted quilts that warmed those who dwelt within is the log cabin pattern. Although there are many variations, this design traditionally uses dark and light coloured strips of cloth to represent logs on the north and south sides of a log cabin. The hearth, and heart, of the home is often a central block of red.

Assembled in the midst of friendship and laughter at quilting bees, the finished quilts provided warmth, were artistic expressions of the social and cultural environments in which they were created and became treasured heirlooms for generations. In a very real way, they brought people together in both place and time.
