Did you know?!

This design celebrates some of Canadians’ favourite, most iconic, foods. Topping the list is, naturally, maple syrup. It is so loved by Canadians and anyone else who has tasted it that it is a commodity actively traded on the stock exchange! But did you know that the process of making maple syrup was taught to early European settlers by Iroquois villagers living along the St. Lawrence River?

Also, did you know that many Canadians call the McIntosh apple Canada’s national apple? It was discovered growing on a farm not far from our national capital in 1811. Today, it can be found in almost every Canadian grocery store.

After a hearty meal of pea soup, tortiere or perhaps maple syrup-glazed salmon served with wild rice, you will not likely be very hungry but, if you are, scrunchions, pemmican or dulse make tasty snacks. For a sweet tooth, beaver tails, Nanaimo bars and butter tarts are the best!

Canadians love food and our favourites reflect the diverse origins of our society. It is this diversity, most clearly expressed through food, that hints at our tremendous potential. For, with food and the warmth of hospitality Canadians share with one another and with visitors to our nation, are shared ideas and differing perspectives. When our understanding and perspectives expand, great things can be accomplished!
